Bali Stopover Tips

A short, smart Bali stopover guide for international travelers: where to stay, when to go, what it costs, and the best 2–3 day itineraries.

Bali sits on the way to or from much of Asia, Europe and Australia, and a 2–3 night stop turns a regular long-haul ticket into a holiday before the holiday.

Airport tips

Denpasar (DPS) is small but immigration can take 45+ minutes after big flights from Australia.

  • Visa on Arrival: IDR 500,000 (~AUD 50), card or cash
  • Use Bluebird taxis or Grab — avoid the airport taxi mafia at the exit
  • International tourist tax: IDR 150,000 (~AUD 15) — pay online before arrival

Best areas to stay

Different Balis suit different stop lengths.

  • Seminyak: beachy, polished, walkable — great for 1–2 nights
  • Canggu: surf, cafés, younger crowd
  • Ubud: rice fields, yoga, jungle — 45 min from airport
  • Uluwatu: cliffs, surf, sunsets — best for short luxe stops

Hotel recommendations

Bali punches well above its price point.

  • Seminyak: The Legian, Katamama, W Bali
  • Canggu: COMO Uma Canggu, The Slow
  • Ubud: Bisma Eight, Four Seasons Sayan (splurge)
  • Uluwatu: Bulgari Resort, Alila Villas

Food suggestions

Mix warungs (local) with the polished cafés Bali is famous for.

  • Warung Babi Guling Ibu Oka (Ubud) for suckling pig
  • Nusantara by Locavore for refined Indonesian
  • Crate Café (Canggu) for breakfast
  • Single Fin (Uluwatu) for sunset drinks

Transport advice

Distances look short on a map but Bali traffic is brutal — plan stops by region.

  • Grab and Gojek work in most areas (some villages restrict them)
  • Hire a driver for the day: ~AUD 60 for 8 hours
  • Don't ride a scooter unless you've ridden one before — and wear a helmet

Budget estimates (per person, per day)

Bali is one of the best AUD–value destinations on earth.

  • Backpacker: AUD 60–90
  • Mid-range: AUD 120–220
  • Luxury: AUD 400+

Practical insights

A few small things that make a big difference.

  • Dry season (May–Oct) is ideal; wet season showers are usually short
  • Power adapters: same as Europe (Type C/F)
  • Tap water isn't safe — bottled or filtered only

Two nights in Seminyak or Uluwatu is enough to feel like you've had a proper holiday — and your onward flight will feel like a bonus.
